Project 52: Weeks 4 & 5 | Infertility

A loud secret

Did you know 1 in 10 couples suffers from infertility? Brutal honesty time? Jeff and I are one of the 1 in 10.

We have tried for over 3 years to have a third baby. We’ve done fertility drugs, charting, and a host of other embarrassing, time consuming, exhausting, heart wrenching things. Hours of praying. Hours of our loved ones and friends praying. Begging to God in the middle of the night with silent tears seeping into the pillowcase. Smiling genuine smiles as my sister and several other close friends announce a pregnancy and have their baby. Sometimes twice. One of the hardest things, for me, was sitting on the sidelines while a handful of other women I am close to and also had conception issues got pregnant. All of them. But me.

I’ve been somewhat vocal on Facebook about our experiences. 5 months ago, after a year of fertility drugs that made me crazy, sad, and bloated, we stopped trying. No more meds. No more schedules. No more charting. No more heartache every month. I literally gave it up to God. Was not bitter. A little sad, yes, but hopeful for the moving forward period of our lives. No more diaper bags or bottles. I got rid of all our baby stuff – gone. I cleaned out closets and cleaned out my heart.

For weeks 4 and 5, I’ve made a video diary about our experiences with infertility.

Don’t. Skip. It.

Project 52: Week 3

Sick.

Welcome to week 3 of my yearlong photography project. After an impromptu, super quick shoot for week one  (think a black sheet draped over the backs of kitchen chairs butted up against the sliding glass door,) I put a little more effort into week two which ended up being super successful despite my bruised ego.

Week three was upon me and we had… the FLU. In the worst way. I didn’t leave my house for 11 days, nor my bed for almost 4, and may have accidently infected half of our church family. Oops!

Sneak Peek… {sweet baby girl} Madeline

Sweet Girl

This is Madeline! She is a super sweet little missy with a flair for a little drama. She is the kind of baby that you have to let warm up to you and then it is all baby jibberish and drooly smiles. This little sweetheart visited the studio twice to complete her sessions. She wasn’t feeling 100% at her first appointment so mom and I planned another little shoot to round out her gallery. Worth it, I’d say! Check her out below:

Flight

Welcome to week 2 of my yearlong photography project. After an impromptu, super quick shoot for week one  (think a black sheet draped over the backs of kitchen chairs butted up against the sliding glass door,) I put a little more effort into week two. Enough that I was stacking counter height stools on tables and then precariously leaning/teetering on said stool.

Yes. I did fall. My pride, and my right shoulder, is all jacked up. Worth it though!

Any theme suggestions for next week? Let me know!

Little Studmuffin

Meet baby Dexter! My first client of 2013. Dexter’s mommy received a gift certificate for a newborn session at her baby shower. Isn’t that an incredible gift?!

We met up at the studio in Everett last week for his newborn session and Dexter was a COMPLETE angel. Seriously. 90 minutes in and out. Usually a newborn session lasts an average of 3 hours! Check him out below:

2013: Personal Project

p52

Last year, I attempted Project 365 as my personal photography project for the year. P365 is one image a day for a year. I think I made it to week 3 or so and then… life got in the way. This year, I thought about attempting Project 52 which is very similar to P365 but instead of one image a day for a year, P52 is one image a week for a year.

And here is is… January 7th. The first week almost gone already and I was still without an image.

However, I did not feel discouraged. I tend to work best under pressure you see. My ultimate goal for P52 this year is to stretch myself; creatively, professionally, personally. Each week I want the image to take me outside of my comfort zone in one way or another. This could be a self portrait without make-up, a complicated lighting situation, intense Photoshop manipulation, whatever I fancy that week. I’m sure some weeks will be a bust and my P52 for that week will just be another ridiculously cute image of my boys, but… I’m OK with that.

The first image of P52:2013 is below.

The challenge? I was stuck at home on a dreary, gray day. The kids were eating lunch and daylight is slipping away. I gave myself 15 minutes and 10 frames to come up with something I could be proud of. So, I threw a black sheet over the backs of some dining room chairs right next to our sliding glass door, jammed my mkii on a tripod, grabbed a 16×20 piece of white foam core, and pulled my scarf up.

See you around next week!
